By Markus Grill

In Markus Grill’s new book ‘Sick Business’, the reader learns that the prices charged for pharmaceutical products are – in contrast with the picture painted in advertisements – anything but ‘fair’ and can, because of the protection given by patents, be set in a completely arbitrary manner, and that, accordingly, they are usually exorbitant.

The justification given for this is that expensive innovations are involved, but here too appearances are deceptive: according to Grill, the pharmaceutical industry spends twice as much on marketing as on research – after all, doctors and patients have to be convinced by one means or another of the value of expensive and mostly superfluous preparations.
